Organic social: how to win attention while your competitors pay for it

28 Sept 2026 · 6 min read

Ad costs keep climbing and free clicks keep shrinking. Why organic social is the best-value channel right now, and exactly what to do this week if you are doing nothing.

Why is everyone talking about organic again?

Because ads got expensive and attention didn't. Meta CPMs are up double digits year on year, Google is more crowded than it has ever been, and AI Overviews are answering questions before anyone clicks through. The maths that made paid the default channel five years ago doesn't hold the way it used to. Organic is the one channel where the cost of entry is effort, not an auction.

And to be clear, we don't mean the organic that costs five dollars more at the shops. This is the opposite kind. It's the only thing in marketing that hasn't gone up in price.

The honest numbers

Industry benchmarks this year put average Meta CPMs up somewhere between 13 and 28 percent year on year, with US averages now sitting around the 18 to 23 dollar mark before you've earned a single click. Australian service businesses feel that as cost per lead creep: same budget, same ads, fewer leads. On the Google side, more advertisers are fighting for the same real estate while AI Overviews quietly shrink the free clicks underneath them.

We run paid media for clients every day and we are not telling you to switch it off. Paid works when the offer and the follow-up work. But if paid is your only channel, you are renting every bit of attention your business gets, and the rent just went up again.

Why organic works better now than it did three years ago

A few things changed in your favour while everyone was staring at their ad account.

Feeds reward faces, not logos. The platforms are drowning in polished, AI-generated sameness, so the algorithms and the humans both lean toward real people talking plainly. A founder explaining a decision on their phone camera consistently beats a branded graphic that cost ten times more.

Social platforms are search engines now. A huge share of buyers type their question straight into Instagram, TikTok or YouTube instead of Google. If your content answers the questions your customers actually ask, you get found without bidding on anything.

Zero-click content gets pushed. Posts that deliver the full answer in the feed, no link, no gate, get shown to more people because the platforms want users to stay put. Giving your best tips away is now the growth strategy, not the leak.

The buying conversation moved to DMs. Comments and messages are where deals start. One good post that triggers ten DM conversations is worth more than a thousand impressions of an ad nobody wanted.

Not doing anything organic? Do this in the next week

None of this needs a videographer, an agency or a content calendar with 40 tabs.

  1. Write the founder post. Why you started, one real problem you fixed for a customer, what you'd tell someone walking into your industry today. Post it from your personal profile, not the company page. This one post outperforms a month of logo content.

  2. List the ten questions customers ask you every week. Each one becomes a post: say the question out loud on camera or write it plainly, answer it properly. Use the words your customers use, because that's what social search matches on.

  3. Give the whole answer away. No "link in bio to find out more". The post itself delivers the value. Trust compounds and the algorithm rewards you for keeping people on the platform.

  4. Ask for the conversation. End posts with a simple ask: comment a keyword and I will send you the checklist, or just "DM me the word audit". The private conversation is where the lead actually happens.

  5. Spend fifteen minutes a day engaging. Comment properly on local businesses, clients and industry accounts. Visibility on other people's audiences is free distribution.

What a month of this looks like

Weeks one and two usually feel like shouting into a paddock. That's normal. Around weeks three and four the compounding starts: posts begin answering searches, a founder post gets shared, two or three DM conversations turn into real enquiries. Organic is slow then sudden. The businesses that win at it are rarely the most talented, they are the most consistent.

The other thing organic does quietly: it makes your paid work better. Warm audiences click cheaper, retargeting pools grow on their own, and prospects who have watched you talk for a month close faster on the call. Organic doesn't replace paid, it lowers the cost of everything around it.

The part nobody tells you

Most businesses quit organic at exactly the moment it is about to work. If you can't commit to showing up weekly for eight weeks, fix that before you spend another dollar anywhere. Attention you earn is the only attention that gets cheaper over time.

If you want a straight answer on where organic fits your business, and what to fix first, book fifteen minutes with me. You leave the call with the three plays I would run for your business, whether we ever work together or not. No lock-in, no pitch deck, and nothing to prepare. You bring the business, we bring the plan.
